RAWLINGS ALO78 REVIEW
AT A GLANCE
The Rawlings ALO78 is a bat for Youth & Rec League hitters, helping them generate good bat swing speed AND improved bat control. The Rawlings ALO78 is a lightweight, two-piece, balanced bat with a -12 -drop that does a great job of delivering consistent “pop” across the barrel. That combination and the ALO78’s durability makes it a good choice for Youth & Rec League 8U & 10U teams, helping young hitters get good contact while they are still developing strength and timing. NOTE: The 2025 & 2026 Rawlings ALO78 models are very similar.
It is a Balanced bat with a -12 drop helps Youth & Rec League players generate good bat swing speed AND helps young hitters improve their ability to adjust their swing plane to pitch level
Two-piece composite bat with a very large sweet spot that provides “pop” across the length of the barrel
Composite construction reduces “sting” and improves vibration control
No break-in required - hot right out of the wrapper
Better choice for younger, smaller hitters than for stronger hitters who will overpower this light-swinging bat
Good fit for Youth & Rec League players as a Team bat
Could be a good choice for new, smaller Slap Hitters
The Rawlings ALO78 is built to help younger hitters create good bat swing speed and more frequent good contact. It is not built to generate top exit velocity via brute force hitters. For the right hitter, that matters more than loading up extra barrel weight she cannot control. However, the Rawlings ALO78 does provide good “pop” across the barrel for its target age group and in its price range - it is one of the better bats in this category for Youth & Rec League hitters.
Power & Exit Velocity
Wh
Youth & Rec League hitters who need to generate good bat swing speed and need a lighter swing to better control the bat in the hitting zone. Teams (8U and 10U) that need a bat multiple hitters can share without worrying about durability issues.
Swing Weight & Feel
Sweet Spot & Forgiveness
The Rawlings ALO78’s two-piece, composite construction gives Youth & Rec League hitters a bat with a very large, forgiving sweet spot. This is a bat that helps young hitters make more consistent contact, creating a larger margin of error on off-center hits, making it a good choice for developing hitters who need help squaring the ball up.
Break-in & Durability
The Rawlings ALO78 does not require a break-in period - it comes hot out of the wrapper. Any break-in work is primarily for hitters to become familiar with the bat.
The Rawlings ALO78 is not ideal for Power Hitters who want to generate their personal best exit velocity when they have good contact. They will overpower this light-swinging bat with squared up balls ending up with less exit velocity/distance than expected.
FINAL VERDICT
The Rawlings ALO78 is a good bat for younger hitters who need bat swing speed, bat control, and a confidence-building feel more than raw power. Its balanced swing, -12 drop, and two-piece composite construction make it a strong fit for Youth & Rec League teams with young players who are still developing good swing mechanics. The ALO78 is also a good choice as a bat for developing Slap Hitters.

Price vs. Value
At a Price (MSRP) of $249.99 the Rawlings ALO78 makes sense only if you fit the hitter profile.
You ARE paying for:
A light-swinging bat that helps Youth & Rec League hitters generate good bat swing speed AND better bat control in the hitting zone
One of the better performing bats (i.e., good “pop”) with a large, forgiving sweet spot for Youth & Rec League hitters
Good vibration control, reducing/eliminating “stinging hands”
Durability with heavy use as a Team bat
You ARE NOT paying for:
Direct energy transfer from hitter to the ball
High exit velocity
A power bat to drive the ball to the fence
The Rawlings ALO78’s two-piece, composite construction also provides good vibration control, reducing “sting” from mis-hits and in cold weather. This is very important for new, young players who might get discouraged if contact frequently results in “stinging hands”.
That makes the ALO78 a good fit for hitters who:
Are young or undersized
Need more bat speed
Tend to drag heavier bats through the hitting zone
Need a confidence-building bat
Are learning how to become a Slap Hitter.
The Rawlings ALO78 has a good track record for durability. This in part because these bats are used by younger, smaller hitters that don’t put much stress is in their bats. This makes the ALO78 a good choice as a Youth & Rec League Team bat.

The Rawlings ALO78 is a two-piece, balanced feel with a -12 drop that makes it an easy, light-swinging bat for younger hitters to get the bat moving early and move the bat’s swing plane to the ball’s path. This increases good contact and harder hit balls - and more FUN!!! The two-piece composite construction should also give it a smoother feel than stiffer one-piece bats for this age group and in this price range. If a hitter needs help with bat swing speed and bat control, this bat makes more sense than a heavier model built for stronger players.
Importantly, the Rawlings ALO78 is not designed for aggressive, stronger hitters who want extra barrel mass (weight) to drive the ball further - they will overpower the bat resulting in balls that travel less than expected.
WANT TO SAVE SOME MONEY? The 2025, & 2026 Rawlings ALO78 models are very similar. If price matters, the 2025 bat may be the better value.

My final advice:
Use it sparingly in practice (other than break-in period), saving it for games
Don’t use it in weather under 60 degrees
Always check the bat’s Certification standing for the Association, League or Tournaments where you plan to use it
Make certain you understand both Rawlings’ and your selected retailer’s warranties and return policies
